The first Adelphi Hotel on the present site was opened in l826 by owner James Radley. It soon became the most popular hotel in the city and gained a reputation throughout Britain and Europe. In 1912, another great hotelier, Arthur Towle, acquired and rebuilt the Adelphi. Today’s building still reflects his care and ambition to make it one of the most luxurious in Europe, with solid marble walls in many of the bedrooms, a fine indoor heated swimming pool, sauna and full central heating. Luxury indeed!

Sandbanks beach (winner of more European Blue Flags than any other British resort, continues past the entrance to Poole Harbour and down to Studland Village in the Isle of Purbeck.

The Lake District is an area of stunning natural beauty with its mountains, steep fell sides and tranquil waters. See the Cumbrian Mountains towering above wooded hillsides, green fields and of course the magnificent lakes which give the area its name.

A marvellous train ride – reputed to be the most scenic in England is the highlight of this lovely weekend. The 72 mile route from Carlisle to Settle takes you on a journey through the gentle, lush rolling hills of the Eden Valley, with rural villages and market towns, into the magnificent Yorkshire Dales at Garsdale and then into Dentdale. It traverses the longest tunnel on the line at Blea Moor, then continues over the 24 arches of the Ribblehead Viaduct to reach Settle.

Rich in history and picture-book villages, and birthplace of artist John Constable, we visit what is arguably one of the prettiest areas in England. We also visit the Roman city of Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town.
